About the Show

A handful of audience members gather in an intimate space. A mouth, no, a woman speaks—she utters a torrent of words, as searing and searching a text as Beckett ever wrote. With scalding intensity, the play clamors to discover: who are we when we are our whole selves when we speak and hear all our voices in a moment—in their rages and echoes and mis-rememberings and deprecations and desires.

About the Artists

Not I is the inaugural production of Joyous Eddies House of Theater, a collaboration between Mark Lord and Catharine Slusar, who first worked together at Bryn Mawr College, where Lord directed Slusar in a production of King Lear. Catharine Slusar, a Barrymore award winning actor, is well known to Philadelphia audiences for her ferocious performances as Martha In Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Theater Exile) and Prospero (Shakespeare in Clark Park). Mark Lord has been sharing work at FringeArts since its early days, including Beckett’s Endgame, Across (a hundred station site-specific project staged throughout Old City), Peter Handke’s The Ride Across Lake Constance, and Zone.

Lord and Slusar have developed independent reputations for working fearlessly and boldly, often seeking out the most compelling, challenging projects imaginable. Joyous Eddies was founded to facilitate collaborative work that puts rich and complex texts into the context of rich, embodied performances.

Not I is supported by the Bryn Mawr College Faculty Research Fund and Plaisir D’Amour Petit Théâtre in Sauve, France, where an early version of this project was developed.
