Founded in 2002 by Artistic Director Hua Hua Zhang, Visual Expressions is committed to using Asian and Western puppet art to explore universal themes and ideas through visual cross–cultural expression using theatrical performances and educational programs. It is our dream and our mission to use touring performances and residency programs to broaden our audiences’ and our students’ perspectives and open their hearts by sharing, appreciating, understanding and embracing the many differences, and mostly the similarities, among our cultures so that we can all find each other in peace. Hua Hua Zhang was featured as a solo performer with “The Gate” for 13 years, performing in countries on three different continents. She is a highly sought after teaching artist, and has received awards from the Beijing City Cultural Bureau, the University of Connecticut, The 21th UNIMA Congress & World Puppet Festival in Chengdu China, and others. Visual Expressions recently completed an installation performance of “White Nights” at the Lize International Puppet Art Festival of Taiwan, and will be featured this November at the Ellen Stewart Theater of LaMama in New York City as part of the 2018 La MaMa Puppet Series.
