Beards follows the story of a young woman named Eva living in Manhattan in 1959. In this play, we watch her navigate relationships of all kinds as she grows a “beard” business in which she rents herself—and eventually, others—out to gay men of all backgrounds to pass themselves off as straight couples. With witty characters, an intricate storyline, and pop-rock music with influences from the 1950s and 1960s, Beards examines themes of feminism and LGBTQ+ rights, family values, moral absolutism, and emotional prostitution through a modern lens.
