In Cahoots’ first official production was a devised project, Traveling to a Strange Place at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point. The project was a co-directed/devised/written show that focused on feminist issues with Founder and Artistic Director Tori Mittelman and Mona Maclay. It was during this endeavor that the term In Cahoots was coined, after a professor of Maclay’s and Mittelman’s used the term to describe the pair’s friendship and unconventional method of collaboration. Mittelman believes that theatre can and should be used as a tool to show societal strife and bridge the gap between all aspects of life. Theatre should not be an event for the priviledged, but an experience accessible to anyone willing to be thrown into the world with us. In Cahoots strives to work with as many different disciplines as possible, ranging from scientists, painters, musicians, mathematicians, etc. Theatre should not set up a divide between societal structures, but break them down and create a new form of artistic expression. In Cahoots plans on being a theatre that doesn’t stay in one place, but follows its artists all over the world in order to reach as many people as possible.
