La Peg at FringeArtsMap

Peg is done edging. She’s ready for a big finish. Since February 2016 the elusive Peg (a.k.a. John Jarboe a.k.a. the impresario of The Bearded Ladies Cabaret) has provided you with monthly treats at her home and namesake La Peg. Every month (sort of) for seven years you have been able to eat burgers and sip cocktails while famed cabaret artists from around the world serenade you, artists from Joey Arias and Justin Vivian Bond to Tareke Ortiz and Dynasty Handbag. We’ve also featured local luminaries like Martha Graham Cracker, Cookie Diorio, Sapphira Cristál, Emily Bate, and Glitter and Garbage. See below for a full list.

After all that build up she is ready to erupt into her next chapter with you. Come celebrate seven years of Pegging with Peg and some of her favorite artists. This climax will involve a live band led by silver fox Heath Allen and a tour of all the costumes from seven years of pegging.

About Cookie Diorio

Cookie Diorio (she/her) is a Philadelphia-based drag performer, a classically trained vocalist, a songwriter, an activist, a husband, mother of the House of Diorio, a music teacher and lover of all things sparkly. She mastered walking in 5 inch stilettos in the night clubs of Boston, achieved her hair fantasy by studying vintage videos of Grace Bumbry. Cookie grew up in historic Auburn, NY with gospel in her ears, civil rights in her blood and many songs in her heart. She trained at Ithaca College in the voice studio of Angus Godwin and learned from master teachers such as Carol McAmis in vocal pedagogy, Lawrence Doebler in choral arts, Dana Wilson in composition and Patrick Hansen in opera coaching. She founded the giving project Art of the Heel, has produced many solo shows including the off-broadway one-night-only Fire In My Bones: A Gospel Jubilee (Kraine Theater, NYC), given a TEDx talk at Rosetree, had a takeover at The Barnes Foundation and is an ASSociate Artist of the Bearded Ladies Cabaret.

About Messapotamia Lefae

Messapotamia Lefae (she/her) is queer performance artist based in Philadelphia, PA. Messy uses devised one-on-one lip sync performance, monologue, contemporary dance, vulnerability, and comedy to heal the wounds of transphobia, nurture queer community, and bring joy into the world. Messy was awarded a Philadelphia Asian Performing Artist (PAPA) Mini-Residency to develop a piece called Aswang about family estrangement, secret traumas, and first-generation Filipino-American identity. She and choreographer Cameron Lussier will create a dance film, which builds upon a creative writing collaboration with playwright Arthur Robinson.

Messy has performed with The Bearded Ladies Cabaret in Bastille Day at Eastern State Penitentiary, Color Me Bearded at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Do You Want a Cookie? in the 2018 Fringe Festival. In the 2019 Fringe Festival, Messy and designer Christopher Ash created immersive, projection-assisted performances inside a vintage camper at the Bearded Ladies’ Late Night Snacks Cabaret. In the 2022 Fringe Festival, Messy created one-on-one Peep Show performances at the Bearded Ladies’ Late Night Snacks Cabaret in collaboration with John Jarboe, Jo Vito Ramirez, Liz Atkinson, and Bless Rudisill, which connected her with dozens of individuals via headphones and direct eye contact through a peephole.

About MK Tuomanen

MK Tuomanen (they/them) is a performance artist and writer whose piece Hello! Sadness! was seen at FringeArts in 2017. Dubbed “best theater artist” by Philadelphia Magazine in 2015, they are an associated artist with the Bearded Ladies Cabaret and a founding member of Applied Mechanics. An amateur drummer and professional troublemaker, they sing kweerpunk poetry to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.

About the Bearded Ladies Cabaret

The Bearded Ladies Cabaret is an interdisciplinary troupe of artists who reinvigorate and redefine the form of cabaret in the 21st century by fusing it with theater, opera, and dance. They play with nostalgia and humor to question the embedded social messages in popular culture and tackle the politics of gender, identity, and artistic invention with sparkle and wit. Their work has been seen all over Philadelphia including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Eastern State Penitentiary, Opera Philadelphia, the Wilma Theater, and FringeArts and they have brought their cabaret revolution to Miami, New Zealand, Seattle, Paris, Maryland, Delaware and New York City (Ars Nova, La Mama, and Joe’s Pub).
