THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED

Influenced by both eastern and western theatrical practices, the Brahe Mask Method is a deeply personal and highly physical work utilizing techniques such as Improvised Mask Exploration, Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms, Working Gesture, Clown Nose, Atmosphere, and Somatic Intuition. The wooden masks that are used are all hand-carved in Mas, Bali, and are considered sacred works of art. In this 3-day introductory workshop, students will be given multiple opportunities to confront, play, and without judgment, explore and engage with aspects of their own humanity. They will learn how to approach the expression of masked characters through listening and the manifestation of their somatic awareness. Studying this work can result in a heightened understanding of self, access, and ability to authentically express character, a healthier relationship with ego, and a greater sense of strength and mobility. All participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Please note: All participants of The Mask Arts Symposium workshops will be able to join our free in-house “Finding Funding & Grants for Artists Workshop!” Also, all participants of any of our workshops will be invited to display their masks in our gallery during our open house on Oct 1st and Oct 2nd as well as perform and demonstrate their mask and theater work for a live audience.

About the Artists

Benjamin Bass, (they/them) is a Philly-based actor, rapper, teacher, and poet.
Graduating with their BFA from SUNY Purchase, Benjamin has been lucky enough to perform around the world. Notable credits include, “The Woodsman” (*Obie Award winner), “The Accountant” and the Chinese national tour of “One Starry Night.”
Benjamin’s mask background is in the Brahe Mask Method, a deeply personal and highly physical work utilizing techniques such as Improvised Mask Exploration, Gabrielle Roth’s 5 Rhythms, and Somatic Intuition. They first began their training in this work under Akil Davis back in 2010 while pursuing their undergrad, and would eventually be given permission to teach by the originator of the method, Per Brahe. Both as a performer as well as an educator, Benjamin’s work is predominantly rooted in the exploration and questioning of identity, acceptance, and expansion.
