Witness contemporary ballet and motionless beauty captured by an enclosing sculpture garden. This collaborative performance and exhibition, with dancer/choreographer Alessandra Mullin and sculptor Clete Shields, sheds light upon the dance between suspended and grounded forms of art.
Alessandra Mullin, born and raised in Philadelphia, danced professionally with the Pennsylvania Ballet and has performed roles in various works including George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker and Jewels and Christopher Wheeldon’s Carnival of the Animals. Alessandra has trained extensively under the direction of Arantxa Ochoa, as well as Alexei and Natalia Charov, and has studied at the School of Pennsylvania Ballet, the School of American Ballet, Miami City Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, Koresh Dance, and the Rock School in Philadelphia.
Alessandra currently attends the University of Pennsylvania where she studies psychology and legal studies and she is a Realtor® with Allan Domb Real Estate in Rittenhouse Square. Clete Shields is a self-taught sculptor living and working in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shields’s work has been commissioned by Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2011, Shields was commissioned by Capital Area Statues, Inc. (CAST) to design and sculpt an eight-foot tall bronze monument of country music star Willie Nelson for the city of Austin, Texas; as well as the “Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy,” a fourteen-foot tall bronze monument for Texas State University in San Marcos. In 2012 Shields’s Willie Nelson maquette was voted into the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
*Movements capture the breath and fluidity of ever changing human life; the dancer mirrors both the stillness and chaos of the world surrounding us.* Event opens with the dance performance that runs 20 minutes and is followed by the art opening and artist meet and greet. Must purchase ticket before the start of the performance.
