MUJERES is a compilation of dance works by female choreographers, Gavino and Carbonell. Gavino’s “HERstory” explores pre-colonial matrilineal bloodlines from the perspective of an Indigenous Filipina. Carbonell’s “Milk” delves into motherhood, investigating sustenance passed from mother to child.

__

Evalina Carbonell and Annielille Gavino are both mothers who are still actively performing and creating dance works despite the demands of motherhood. Both have the commonality of drawing inspiration from their experiences as mothers to daughters. “Mujeres” is a dedication to all daughters who need to know their strength and agency. This work is particularly dedicated to Lina Carbonell and Malaya Kollman. Annielille Gavino’s HERstory is supported by the Small but Mighty Art Grant. It is an interdisciplinary dance work that will include film by Jasmine Lynea Callis, poetry by Lenora Howard and music by Maya Simonee. Thanks to her receipt of this year’s Ellen Forman award, Evalina Carbonell will be continuing her exploration of her work, Milk beginning this fall with Drexel University’s Dance Ensemble.
