Our story begins with a definition: medium – noun ( pl. – media or mediums). An agency or means by which something is accomplished, communicated, or conveyed to the senses. The specific material or method of creative expression used by an artist, composer, performer, or writer. A substance or environment in which an organism lives, functions and thrives; a cultural medium. A person thought to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension. The middle quality or state between two extremes of size or another quality; a reasonable balance; halfway between rare and well-done. The name of a Philadelphia-based theatre company encompassing all of the previously defined ideas. Founded in 2012, the Medium Theatre Company creates interdisciplinary experiences in unusual spaces. We imbue audiences with plays they can see, hear, touch, taste, and fully feel, and make stuff for folks who might not usually go “to the theater.” As such, we bring theatre to the people via affordable ticket prices, community engagement, and stories that serve up subtle social commentary in the way a chef serves a 10-course meal. Recent offerings in Philly include Cones, a solo show about vampires, vision loss, and ice cream; The Gauntlet, an interactive romp through purgatory; and Nobody’s Home, the multi-sensory meditation-comedy that’s toured to more than 50 bedrooms around the U.S. The Medium Theatre Company is comprised of Morgan Fitzpatrick Andrews, Mason Rosenthal, and Dani Solomon.
