DescriptionAbout the Artists

“[Rhys Chatham] is one of noise rock’s founding fathers. Without him, there would be no Sonic Youth, no Jesus and Mary Chain, no My Bloody Valentine.” Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune

Composer, guitarist and trumpet player Rhys Chatham altered the DNA of rock and created a new type of urban music by fusing the overtone-drenched minimalism of the early 60s with the relentless, elemental fury of the Ramones—colliding the textural intricacies of the avant-garde with the visceral punch of electric guitar-slinging punk rock.

Here Chatham is joined by bassist Tim Dahl, best known as the bass player and co-composer of the noise-rock band Child Abuse and Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus, and drummer Kevin Shea, whose innovative approach to battery is devoted to sonic diversity. Prepare for a journey into the post-punk instrumental.

About Rhys Chatham

Rhys Chatham is a composer/performer from NY currently living in Paris. Having played in the groups of Tony Conrad and La Monte Young during the early seventies, his current projects include his orchestras of 100-200 electric guitars as well as his smaller Guitar Trio configuration. He plays trumpet, flutes and electric guitar going through a battery of delays in solo contexts as well as with other musicians including Charlemagne Palestine, z’ev, Le sacre bleu, and French improvisors Jean-François Pauvros and Jean-Marc Montera.

He is best known as the bass player and co-composer of the noise-rock band Child Abuse and Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus. He has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan with both groups. Tim has also performed with many notable musicians, composers and performers including Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Tatsuya Yoshida, Von Freeman, Stanley Jordan, Mary Halvorson, Malcolm Mooney, Marc Ribot, Brian Chase, Hamid Drake, Elliot Sharp, Weasel Walter, Marni Nixon etc. Tim currently lives in Brooklyn and is an active member in its music scene.

About Kevin Shea

Kevin Shea is valued as being a vital and original artist in the contemporary music scene. Shea’s originality is manifested not only by his personal approach to his instrument, but also throughout his constant search for new musical horizons unifying all the bands he has been involved in despite the parameters set for musicians by genre definition, or by historical icons. He is a member of the acclaimed avant-garde jazz quartet Mostly Other People Do the Killing, People (with guitarist Mary Halvorson), Sexy Thoughts, Talibam!, the lamentably departed Storm & Stress, and more, and has collaborated with a veritable who’s who of forward-thinking musical greats. In 2012 the Village Voice dubbed him “the best drummer in New York.”
