Great Plays. Serious Drinking. Inspiring Theater.

Fire up your Tinder profile (seriously) and get ready for Shakespeare @ the Bar, a no‐holds‐barred experience of Shakespeare like no other in Philadelphia! Grab a beer at City Tap House (3925 Walnut St.) and drink in The Taming of the Shrew! This lightly rehearsed production of the Bard’s most irreverent romantic comedy exposes one man’s lusty, raucous scheme to “take one for the team” and get filthy rich in the process!

According to tradition, Shakespeare didn’t over rehearse his own plays, and actors only got about two rehearsals before having to get up in front of an audience of rowdy drunks. Everyone loved it. That is how Shakespeare performed Shakespeare. In a bar. For drunk people. Have we said it enough? Shakespeare @ the Bar stays true to the 16th century inn yard by bringing 21st century audiences great plays in serious craft beer bars.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11 at City Tap House in University City (3925 Walnut St.), and there will be music beforehand for however long we feel like it. At best, the space between the actors and the audience is blurred, but there will be some seating available on chairs and picnic benches. If you’re worried about it, you are encouraged to bring your own lawn chair, camp stool, or throne.
