This is a Play About Buttons, written by Emily Wanamaker and directed by Kelly Fleming, explores human nature in an absurd world that pits the pursuit of knowledge against the pursuit of happiness in a place where neither seems entirely achievable: an office, where people press buttons all day, every day, forever. What Happened Between the Dakotas, written by Michael Kasper and directed by Allison Mudd, tells the story of two best friends, both named Dakota, who embark on a road trip of self discovery to the border of North and South Dakota, where they are forced to confront the existential dread within themselves and their relationship to the structure of the universe itself. These plays are being produced entirely by students at the University of the Arts looking to expand their work with feedback from the public eye. They are interested in creating new work that challenges what it means to find fulfillment in humanity through humor and absurdism. These plays reflect on how we relate to each other in terms of our personal development in a structured world that is stacked against us. These new works continue to foster the voices of emerging young artists looking to push comfort zones and voice problems that core humanity in new and interesting ways.
