The Weekender: What You’re Doing and Why

Posted June 16th, 2011

Ooooh, weekend picks are back? Yes they are! We have lines on nice things you should do. Here’s a couple like-duh events for this weekend:

>>>Long-time Live Arts fave Headlong Dance Theater (Red Rovers in 2011) teams up with Group Motion and Three Aksha to offer Sam-Gam Bam! this weekend and next. Quoth David Brick: “Amy [Smith is] dancing a punk rock Bharatanatyam solo that she created with Viji Rao.” Experimental and classical dance are getting together and making babies, watch out! Opens Friday, June 17 at 7:30 pm; runs through June 25. Mandell Theater, Drexel University, 3300 Chestnut Street, University City. $15 to $20, hit up Headlong for tix.

>>>The days are getting longest! Time for Summer Solstice at the Kimmel Center! Early on there’s a lot for the kiddies (although the bar is open at noon for Mom and Dad, phew), and as the day progresses hit Rennie Harris RHAW, a Story Slam from our friends at First Person Arts, the MAMBO3000 party, a sweet selection of Philly hip hop, and a ton of just a bout everything else. Like Marc Vetri on guitar? Whaddya know? But at 2:30 p.m. in the Commonwealth Plaza, don’t miss Portrait. Four friends and students from the National Circus School in Montreal present a slice of their life through classical and innovative circus performance. The National Circus School, not incidentally, is where 7 Fingers trained. The kind of work you’ll see? Check out this Traces teaser:

Summer Solstice is Saturday, June 18, starting at noon and finishing at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., Center City. $10 gets you into almost everything. Tix here.
