Philly Fringe Vital Stats: Jessica Warchal-King

Posted August 16th, 2011

Today, meet Jessica Warchal-King, one-third of the folks behind the 2011 Philly Fringe dance piece Doris Says . . .

Name: Jessica C. Warchal-King.

Age: Young enough to still cause trouble but old enough to know better than to answer this question honestly.

Where do you live now? In my heart.

Where were you born? In a coal mine. (okay, so really, really close to one).

What’s your favorite alcoholic beverage? Red wine from Buckingham Vineyards on the Bucks County Wine Trail.

What’s your favorite Philly intersection? Hmmm . . . Maybe 9th and Wharton because it’s close to Chi Mac and South Philly Sports Bar and Grill.

If you were a “Founding Father,” which one would you be and why? I’d be Betsy Ross. I’m not such a good seamstress, but I’m awesome at questioning and defying the reigning norms. Speaking of, why do we call them “Founding Fathers?” Fathers clearly can’t “give birth” let alone “give birth to a nation.” That must’ve hurt. I totally support an active military and am so humbled to have loved ones who fought for and served our country overseas, but birthing? I’ve been told some will chose combat over that. I raise my red wine to the Founding Mothers!

Do you care about the Civil War Sesquicentennial? Sure. I just won’t wear my Yankee colors while they’re playing Dixie.

What’s the worst thing you ever did for money? Charles O. Anderson called me a “dance whore” for auditioning for Cats. That was pretty rough.

Do you own a gun? If so, have you fired it in anger? I don’t, but I have shot one. And no, I had no reason to be angry at turtles. Except that they were eating all of the fish I was trying to catch while whistling “Yankee Doddle Dandy.”

Not such a good way to catch fish! Doris Says . . . runs September 1 and 2 at the CHI Movement Arts Center, 1316 S. 9th Street, South Philly. 8:00 pm both nights, $16.
