Philly Fringe Vital Stats: Todd Cardin

Posted July 30th, 2012

ETC (that is, et cetera) Theater, a Philly Fringe veteran, comes to us from the regal ‘burbs: King of Prussia. Founded by Todd Cardin, the company produces original works intended for “the generations that were raised on and raised by television.” For the 2012 Philly Fringe Festival, they’re putting forward The Has Beens, which follows a boy band that led the charts in 2008, and therefore in 2012 is condemned to the corrals of washed-up-dom. Can they redeem themselves? Will they regain stardom? Will their hunky posters ever domineer the white-washed walls of teenage girls ’round the world (or at least in the parts where pop reigns)? Todd didn’t answer this question. But he answered others.

Todd Cardin as a boy band manager is his new production The Has Beens.

Name: Todd Cardin.

Age: 46.

Show Title: The Has Beens.

Do you have children? If so, do you love them? Two  girls, Esther and Bizzer. They’re O.K., I guess. I only had them because I needed young kids to be in our shows.

What do you love (or hate) most about Philadelphia audiences? Philly audiences hate us. We play to suburbanites, so we tend to bring our own audience.

Did you go to college or grad school? If so, where? I had a cup of coffee at The Ohio State University.

Marvel Comics, or DC? Not a super-hero guy. I prefer Harvey Comics with Casper the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich or Archie Comics.

What’s your favorite nickname for Philadelphia? The City.

What’s the most disgusting thing you’ve ever seen on SEPTA? I’ve never taken public transportation.

The Has Beens runs September 7, 12, 13, and 14 at 8:00 pm, September 8 at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and September 9 at 6:00 pm at The Shubin Theatre, 407 Bainbridge Street.
