Oh Wow! Live Music featuring Honeychile and Shugsline
Honeychile and Special Guest
April 4, 2025
What’s that? Live music? Oh wow! It’s Cannonball’s weekly music series now for one night only on the FringeArts stage. Come hear the tunes of Philly locals and Cannonball favorites Honeychile and Shugsline.
Under the moniker of Honeychile, Philly-based musician, singer, and songwriter Becca Graham explores themes of identity, relationships, and coming-of-age by taking on the roles of a hip-hop emcee and a jazz diva. With a mix of humor, vulnerability, and sass, Honeychile wishes to challenge listeners’ perceptions of the Black musical canon, following in the footsteps of giants past and present.
Shugsline is the solo release moniker of bassist, bandleader, and creative professional Sweet Corey-Bey. Self-described as a modern “Bluesthem”, a term derived from “Bluesman” they are living arbiter of archives of gender-variant performing ancestor icons like Gladys Bentley, Bessie Smith and more. Sweet is a founding member, and bandleader of the gender and genre bending artist collaborative Black Folks Don’t Swim?
Exploring worlds of sunniness, freedom, leisure, emotionality and intimacy in their live performance, Sweet combines soulful chops and flips on sp404 and Koala Sampler, with hypnotic bass lines, titles from their extensive vinyl collection, and poignant vocals.
As a performer and storyteller, Sweet’s practice is based in the fundamental Black music traditions of Blues, Jazz, Funk, Gospel and Soul. They create subversive, liberatory cultural experiences through their music and shows.
