Fallawayinto: Corridors of Rememory

Ninth Planet

A multi-media play by Arielle Julia Brown, constructing a living sanctuary that unites the audiences in collective celebration, mourning, and remembrance.

About the Show

At the center of Fallawayinto: Corridors of Rememory is a multi-media play by Arielle Julia Brown, constructing a living sanctuary that unites audiences in collective celebration, mourning, and remembrance. Donna Nicole Booker, born again in memory, spirit and flesh, leads audiences through a ritual for the recollection of her life, times, pasts and futures. Traversing her travels, sex work, evangelism, mothering, daughtering, art making and activism, Donna rides on the wind of fragmented confessions, heresay, testimonies and songs to share with us her singular life as a Black woman of trans experience. Conjuring memory by her side is her mother, her younger self and her beloved dog on a journey that invites us all to consider the futures of our collective bodies, memories, families and legacies.

Playwright’s Note

This play and indeed ritual ceremony takes witness, trust and endless offering to realize itself. Thank you, audience member, for your witness as a part of that process. This work gathers just a few stories of Donna Nicole Booker’s singular life as a Black woman of trans experience. Over the years of building this work, many people have contributed to the stories engaged and alluded to in this work. Please follow my gratitude as a map of the journey to this work.

Auntie, thank you for every story you told me directly but especially thank you for every story and conversation you let me overhear.  Thank you for seeing and loving me as a young person. Thank you for inviting me into sitting with your life in this way. Thank you for conjuring all of this. We know you are here.

Testifiers, thank you for seeing and knowing Donna and for telling me about it. Thank you to our family of story sharers, Eva C Booker, Loreen Booker, Evie Hargrove and many others. Thank you to Donna’s community – Nilda Rodriguez, Miss Major, Elder Roosevelt, Hazel Weson, Reggie Hughes,  Kayla Moore, Alvis Ward, Elizabeth Ann Jefferson, Pamela Mack, Breonna McCree and countless others who have shared with me more informally about their relationships with Donna.

Thank you to every teacher, artist, arts organization, previous audience/witness and funding partner who has joined this project since the workshopping of its first scene in the spring of 2015. We would not be here in this moment a decade later without you.

Finally, to the ensemble, larger artistic team, project team and Ninth Planet itself, thank you for your fervent commitment and belief in this work. Thank you for sharing your heart, lived experiences, time, sweat and tears in and for this offering. Your gifts bring light to the world of this ceremony.

May we all give thanks for every opportunity to witness, learn from and show up for Black women of trans experience.

They divine in the classroom and find pleasure in the unknown. As a deep listener and neurodivergent human being they are led by curiosities on life, love, grief and the made up and absurd. Their work is ritual, cathartic, raw and unconcerned with beauty, but sometimes beautiful. Told, recently that they write plays, so they write plays and they play. Movement lineages in West African dance, whining, Akoms, Fetes and the Parkway in Brooklyn for carnival. Child of many griot ancestors, hoodoo, christian and neither.
