Proceed with Caution

Proceed with Caution grapples with personal, social, and global security and trust in the present-day—a time of global violence, the Trump presidency, mass shootings, and the #MeToo movement. A group of performers explore security through dance, video projection, and spoken and recorded words

Refreshed and expanded after it’s premiere in the 2018 Fringe Festival, the work directed by Darcy Lyons is back to take the stage at one of Philadelphia’s best venues for dance. Expanded and updated over the past year, Proceed with Caution includes a new twenty minute section about security after 9/11. The central theme of the work comes from security expert Bruce Schneier. He writes: “Security is both a reality and a feeling and they’re not the same thing… The foundation of security is trust, both personal trust and global trust.”

The piece begins to address these questions: How do humans build trust in dance? How do we build trust with each other? How do we build trust in the world at large? How do we address and assess our fears about personal safety? How do our personal feelings of security intersect with global security? How do we make an impact on security through art and activism? With the support of projected video dispersed throughout the piece, the group of performers tell raw stories in their own voices and bodies of their real life experiences of feeling safe, feeling scared, and being truly endangered. The new hour-long version evolves as it moves from the personal to the global, addressing modern issues and how they affect our individual and collective associations and understandings of safety within an increasingly turbulent humanity. Proceed with Caution does not claim to have all the answers, but it’s worth experiencing because the work takes a brave step into exploring one of today’s greatest challenges that everyone can relate to: security.


Lyons and Tigers creates dance theater work for the stage, performance installations, and dance films. We revel in crossing those fabricated lines that often restrict dance making. We enjoy experimenting and taking risks. We are highly collaborative within the company and our work is often co-created with video projection, visual art, and text that is spoken, recorded, and projected. Our work pushes the edges of discomfort, crawls into the risky places that make our hair stand on end, make our hearts softly open to the world, or pull us into one of the many places in between. This production is not suitable for children and may contain triggering content.

Staged in the 100-year-old Racquets court inside the members-only confines of The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, rail. is a play about the cyclical nature of relationships in our lives and the ways we struggle to break free from past events to forge new paths. Sarah, a therapist and former championship squash player, is stuck in a cycle of rotating men in her life, all played by the same actor. She must decide how to break the cycle and find her most singular life.

The Insanity of Mary Girard

In 1790, the wife of noted Philadelphian Stephen Girard awoke to find herself in the mental asylum at The Pennsylvania Hospital. How did she get here? Why has her husband not come to have her released? Is it all a mistake, or is she truly insane? Join us on the inside where we find out more as the tale unfolds.

Sarah Heddins plays Mary Girard in this immersive, thought provoking, and fascinating historical drama about the roles that men and women were expected to play in early American society, and just what can happen when you don’t live up to the expectations of your station. The play centers primarily on Mary’s time in the Pennsylvania Hospital, as told by her and a “greek chorus” of inmates, who help her see clearly the path that lead her to be placed in there with them. This story is based on a letter Stephen Girard wrote to his brother in 1787 where he lamented about,

Having been so foolish as to marry this unfortunate vixen… I treat her properly but at the same time I despise her as much as it is possible to despise anyone… I hate her like the devil and note with pleasure that this feeling increases from day to day.

A powerhouse of actors in this ensemble cast bring the story to life as it is presented in the round, in an intimate theater space. Join us in the basement of the Pennsylvania Hospital as we learn more about Mary and those closest to her, and what led to the tragic fate of Mrs. Stephen Girard.

In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Medusa was a young maiden in service to the temple of Athena. When she caught Poseidon’s attention her fate was sealed—the god forced himself on her in the temple, yet Athena condemned Medusa for having lost her purity, and turned her into the hideous gorgon monster we know, with snakes for hair, so dangerous and hideous that her gaze will turn a man to stone.

Medusa Volution is inspired by her story—by the loss of her humanity, and her condemnation and isolation as a punishment for her sexuality meted out by both male and female gods. Medusa the monster is but one in a Pantheon of female archetypes whose stories are the morality plays of the patriarchy.

About REV Theatre Company

REV Theatre Company brings a fresh contemporary vision to existing dramatic works and company created new pieces. We believe that theater is an experience, an event: the worlds we create are visceral and immediate. The REV aesthetic fuses a profound exploration of the texts with a ferocious emotional landscape, intensely physical staging and musical production numbers.

We present our work in unique and site-specific spaces: we have performed on the steps of the Art Museum, a parking lot in New York, a pier on the Hudson River, a tiny storefront on the Lower East Side of NYC, two Philadelphia cemeteries and the previously empty, disused lot next to the Broad Street Ministry.

One of our trademarks is the active involvement of the audiences in our outdoor productions as we bring the audience into the world that we create. We acknowledge and encourage direct communication and response from our audiences, engaging them in a collective participation with the performers, the story, the action, the space and each other.

REV’s production of Hamlet in Laurel Hill Cemetery 2017 played to sold-out houses. Our summer 2019 production of The Witch of Edmonton at Laurel Hill was also a sell-out. In 2020, REV will present Macbeth, once again in partnership with Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Honey

An evening of original dance created and conceived by Philly-based artists Evalina “Wally” Carbonell and Melissa Rector, Honey delves into the intoxicating search for sweetness, alternately stinging and smooth, viscous and flowing.

Honey is an original dance co-production making its premier at this year’s Fringe Festival. It will be an immersive evening of movement that will both inspire and entertain. Featuring dance that is sweet and stinging, syrupy, and flowing, audiences can expect innovative and moving new choreography by Evalina “Wally” Carbonell and Melissa Rector, with expressive performances by them and their diverse and talented dancers.

About the Artists

Evalina “Wally” Carbonell is a Philadelphia-based dance artist. She received her early training at the National Ballet School in Maryland. She went on to earn her BFA in Dance from Florida State University, studying with such luminaries as Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Suzanne Farrell. Upon graduation, Evalina joined the Roxey Ballet Company, dancing as a principal artist from 2005-2011. As a free-lance artist, she has worked and choreographed extensively, and continues to be an active performer as a guest artist nationally and locally. Evalina teaches dance, GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® in addition to creating her own work. A passionate performer, creator, and teacher, Evalina joined Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers in 2012. In recent years, she has produced four consecutive shows for the Fringe Festival, was the recipient of the Ellen Forman Award for Choreography in 2017, and was honored to create a new choreographic work on the dancers of KYL/D for their fall 2018 home season.

Melissa Rector started dancing at a young age with Monica Folio. She graduated from the University of the Arts in 1993. Melissa has been dancing with Koresh Dance Company since its inception in 1991 and is the company’s assistant artistic director. She is also an instructor at the Koresh School of Dance, where she teaches her unique style that blends modern jazz and Luigi technique. Her work has been performed locally at the Fringe Festival, the Annenberg Center, Drexel University, the Grier School and Brandywine Ballet. She frequently travels around the country to perform, teach master classes and set choreography on students. In 2008, Melissa helped to establish the Koresh Youth Ensemble and serves as their artistic director, setting both original choreography and company repertory on the group.

MyVision Theater Ensemble is an after-school theater company based at The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). All of the Ensemble’s members are in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade. Although MyVision produces theater, the ensemble urges all members to embrace the arts in every form, and members represent every arts major offered at CAPA.

Members of MyVision take on every artistic role in our productions, including writer, director, actor, and designer, among others. The Ensemble creates and presents original, provocative productions. MyVision makes an effort to touch on a wide variety of sensitive subjects including, but not limited to domestic violence, gender identity, and abortion. Bio: Prudence Anne Amsden has recently received her MFA in dance from Temple University and is an emerging interdisciplinary artist in Philadelphia. Once a native of California she has a degree from Mills College in Art History. Through her developing career she has worked with dance artist Molissa Fenly, Shelly Senter, Merian Soto and Awilda Sterling-Duprey, and Lela Aisha Jones. Since moving to Philadelphia, she has become involved in the local drag and queer performance community and now works to bring not traditional drag and experimental improvisation dance together whenever she can. As an artist she is interested in improvisation, performance, drag, video, surrealism, kitsch, camp, horror, humor, feminism, unicorns, garbage and glitter. She is a self identifying dumpster fire, and love to attract and work with people who identify the same way.

No one will be turned down due to lack of funds.

Street Parking is available in the neighborhood, there are two paid lots nearby the venue. Franky Bradley’s is a short walk for the Walnut/Locust st stop on the Broad Street Line. The performance will take place upstairs in Franky Bradley’s lounge.

Red Lodge, Montana

A mysterious death. An enigmatic detective. And some damn fine huckleberry pie. Inspired by the work of filmmaker David Lynch, Red Lodge, Montana will immerse you in a nightmare world of danger, desire, and doppelgängers. (Pie not included.)

Red Lodge, Montana follows a troupe of actors as they attempt to produce their own send-up of David Lynch’s landmark television series Twin Peaks. What they end up creating is a live-action nightmare. Audience members will follow characters through the performance space as if they are walking through one of Lynch’s films.

Please Note: This performance will require audience members to stand and travel through the space, and the venue is not ADA-compliant. The performance contains strobe lights, loud sounds, simulated drug use, nudity, and moments of simulated violence. The Antidote is an ever-changing collective of artists led by Philadelphia-based director and theater artist Michael Osinski. The Antidote believes live performance succeeds most when it entertains audiences and gives them a puzzle to solve. We blend contemporary pop culture with classic plots to craft a new way of telling stories. One that blends timeless tales and viral videos. One that appeals to the fast-paced multi-tasking world we live in.

The Antidote’s first production in 2015—The Hamlet Project—reimagined the Shakespearean classic through the lens of daytime television talk shows, music videos, online blogs, and pharmaceutical commercials. Great Again (2017) paid homage to Ibsen’s housewife heroine Nora Helmer, blending 1950’s sitcoms, dance crazes, and pulp fiction, all within the comfort and confines of a South Philly row home. Most recently The Antidote debuted its take on the self-help seminar with The Celebrity Guide to Mental Health and Wellness at the 2019 Philadelphia SoLow Fest.

You Are Not a Shining Star

Have you ever thought about your legacy? I mean, what makes you SPECIAL? What does it mean to be YOU? Are you the experiences you’ve accumulated? Are you the thoughts in your brain? If you’ve never pondered this, don’t worry. We’re here to help. Shining Star is a movement-based performance that is weird but not boring. This work supports and is supported by Urban Movement Arts (UMA), where we both work and teach. Come dance with us! UMA welcomes adults of all ages and experience levels.

The Murder & Booze Cabaret will also be presented as a part of this year’s NJ Fringe Festival. This will be the second year that Love Drunk Life has presented in NJ Fringe.

Love Drunk Life has collaborated with the Princeton Public Library, EveryLibrary, the New Cannan Library, and the Burlington County Footlighters.

Friends try to be disappointed by each other while waiting in line at the Los Angeles Museum of Art in 1978.

A failed teacher runs into her former mentor at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art while waiting in line for tickets to the King Tutankhamun exhibit. The failed teacher, Leigh, and her mentor, Mr. Porko, awkwardly reminisce and trace the paths their lives have taken, never straying far from the comfort of their own pitiable angst. Wandering LACMA, Leigh and Mr. Porko stumble upon an exhibit of an obscure Chicana artist and take comfort in being aware of a marginalized talent. Featuring an art installation by Osiris Zuniga.
