Proceed with Caution

Proceed with Caution grapples with personal, social, and global security and trust in the present-day—a time of global violence, the Trump presidency, mass shootings, and the #MeToo movement. A group of performers explore security through dance, video projection, and spoken and recorded words

Refreshed and expanded after it’s premiere in the 2018 Fringe Festival, the work directed by Darcy Lyons is back to take the stage at one of Philadelphia’s best venues for dance. Expanded and updated over the past year, Proceed with Caution includes a new twenty minute section about security after 9/11. The central theme of the work comes from security expert Bruce Schneier. He writes: “Security is both a reality and a feeling and they’re not the same thing… The foundation of security is trust, both personal trust and global trust.”

The piece begins to address these questions: How do humans build trust in dance? How do we build trust with each other? How do we build trust in the world at large? How do we address and assess our fears about personal safety? How do our personal feelings of security intersect with global security? How do we make an impact on security through art and activism? With the support of projected video dispersed throughout the piece, the group of performers tell raw stories in their own voices and bodies of their real life experiences of feeling safe, feeling scared, and being truly endangered. The new hour-long version evolves as it moves from the personal to the global, addressing modern issues and how they affect our individual and collective associations and understandings of safety within an increasingly turbulent humanity. Proceed with Caution does not claim to have all the answers, but it’s worth experiencing because the work takes a brave step into exploring one of today’s greatest challenges that everyone can relate to: security.


Lyons and Tigers creates dance theater work for the stage, performance installations, and dance films. We revel in crossing those fabricated lines that often restrict dance making. We enjoy experimenting and taking risks. We are highly collaborative within the company and our work is often co-created with video projection, visual art, and text that is spoken, recorded, and projected. Our work pushes the edges of discomfort, crawls into the risky places that make our hair stand on end, make our hearts softly open to the world, or pull us into one of the many places in between. This production is not suitable for children and may contain triggering content.

Sarah, a therapist and former championship squash player, is stuck in a cycle of rotating men in her life, all played by the same actor. She must decide how to break the cycle and find her most singular life.

Peter Fenton is a Philadelphia-based writer for the stage, screen, and blog committed to creating intelligent, humorous content. He specializes in writing comedy dialog, most frequently within fantasy, fairy tale, and science fiction stories for all ages. Following his first two stage play publications in February 2019, Fenton launched ByPeterFenton.com to begin freelance script and story writing and to host information about each of his stage and screenplays as well as a periodic blog about his writing process and personal life. While they overlapped working at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, director Amanda Pasquini and actress Chelsea Cylinder joined with Fenton to mobilize ByPeterFenton.com as a theatrical production company in May 2019, mounting the world premiere of Fenton’s holiday comedy See Amid the Winter Snow as their debut production.

The Insanity of Mary Girard

Why has her husband not come to have her released? Is it all a mistake, or is she truly insane? Join us on the inside where we find out more as the tale unfolds.

Sarah Heddins plays Mary Girard in this immersive, thought provoking, and fascinating historical drama about the roles that men and women were expected to play in early American society, and just what can happen when you don’t live up to the expectations of your station. The play centers primarily on Mary’s time in the Pennsylvania Hospital, as told by her and a “greek chorus” of inmates, who help her see clearly the path that lead her to be placed in there with them. This story is based on a letter Stephen Girard wrote to his brother in 1787 where he lamented about,

Having been so foolish as to marry this unfortunate vixen… I treat her properly but at the same time I despise her as much as it is possible to despise anyone… I hate her like the devil and note with pleasure that this feeling increases from day to day.

A powerhouse of actors in this ensemble cast bring the story to life as it is presented in the round, in an intimate theater space. Join us in the basement of the Pennsylvania Hospital as we learn more about Mary and those closest to her, and what led to the tragic fate of Mrs. Stephen Girard.

¡Que Ridículo!

Featuring sketch and improv by ¿Qué?—an all-Spanish-speaking group (except for one white dude)—this show is meant to be enjoyed by English speakers as well as Spanish speakers.

About the Artists

Michael S. Watkins and Joe Bell are the hosts of the popular monthly show Comedian Psychoanalysis at Good Good Comedy Theatre. They regularly perform together as the sketch duo Scrote. They also wrote and starred in the original narrative shows Extreme Wrestling Smacksplosion and Prestige Drama for the Five Dollar Comedy Week comedy festival.

Michael S. Watkins is a comedian, performer, writer and musician based out of Philadelphia. Michael hosts the show Comedian Psychoanalysis and is a member of the sketch group Darlings, both at Good Good Comedy Theatre. He is a writer/content creator for The Hard Times and The Hard Drive. He has opened for such acts as Brody Stevens, Andy Blitz and Kyle Dunnigan. He has performed and written shows for Five Dollar Comedy Week, The Fringe Festival and the Blue Heaven Comedy Festival.

Joe Bell is a comedian, performer and writer based out of Philadelphia. Joe hosts the show Comedian Psychoanalysis and is 1/16th of the sketch group Darlings, both at Good Good Comedy Theatre. He’s written and animated cartoons for Comedy Central, as part of Saturday Morning(ish) Cartoons. In 2018, he wrote the ten-issue comic “Last of the Burger Bunch” for the launch of Collegehumor’s Dropout.tv. He’s performed at and written shows for Five Dollar Comedy Week, The Fringe Festival and the Blue Heaven Comedy Festival.

Soar between the planets of our performance solar system. You will be buckled in an out of mini performances inhabiting the studios, cubbies, and closets of Urban Movement Arts (UMA). Quick feet are hidden around the corner. Orbiting bodies invite you with their gravitational field.

Fire in the Sky is a performance event produced by Urban Movement Arts (UMA) community members Queenz Collective (Sanchel Brown & Caitlin Green), Haylee Warner & collaborators, and Kayla Bobalek & Maddie Hopfield.

UMA is producing Fire in the Sky as part of its expanded Artists in Residency (AIR) programs, directed by Lily Kind. The AIR program supports creators of experimental dance, theater, and performance who walk with Afro diasporic and American folk dance traditions. UMA welcomes adults of all ages and experience levels to learn American folk dance and African Diaspora movement genres such as Hip Hop, Jazz, Breaking, Waacking, and House. UMA serves as the downtown hot spot for professional dancers in under-represented forms to practice, cipher, and build.

RE: SHE, a litany of adventures

Born into a lineage of hate, a band of modern-day explorers exhumes an unseen but cancerous tale. As they awaken alternative stories, some must atone for their sins and those they’ve inherited, while others must avenge wrongs still ongoing. If they don’t, they may write the next chapter in this horrific penny dreadful.

Co-producing artistic directors Kate St. John and Amy Shoshana Blumberg founded the after-image in 2019 after creating he called it cymbeline, an immersive rendering of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline. They earned their MFAs in scenic design and theater directing, respectively, and draw on their backgrounds in the Classics and modern dance to develop their work.
