Bio: Prudence Anne Amsden has recently received her MFA in dance from Temple University and is an emerging interdisciplinary artist in Philadelphia. Once a native of California she has a degree from Mills College in Art History. Through her developing career she has worked with dance artist Molissa Fenly, Shelly Senter, Merian Soto and Awilda Sterling-Duprey, and Lela Aisha Jones. Since moving to Philadelphia, she has become involved in the local drag and queer performance community and now works to bring not traditional drag and experimental improvisation dance together whenever she can. As an artist she is interested in improvisation, performance, drag, video, surrealism, kitsch, camp, horror, humor, feminism, unicorns, garbage and glitter. She is a self identifying dumpster fire, and love to attract and work with people who identify the same way.

No one will be turned down due to lack of funds.

Street Parking is available in the neighborhood, there are two paid lots nearby the venue. Franky Bradley’s is a short walk for the Walnut/Locust st stop on the Broad Street Line. The performance will take place upstairs in Franky Bradley’s lounge.

Emergency Contact

bilialien is an evening of short new works by Annie Wilson, creator of the Fringe hit Lovertits (2014). Pieces include keening in the dark. In Celtic tradition, keening is done over a dead body, but that was in a different time. Before the internet. In a world after the internet, celestial creatures trace the periphery of the room, their time onstage, their own vision. And maybe a secret duet will emerge?
bilialien is followed by Yesterday’s Garbage on Friday and Sunday nights. Yesterday’s Garbage is the worst open mic night we could conjure. Produced and hosted in collaboration with Anita Holland, Yesterday’s Garbage is open to anyone who has ever had a bad creative idea.

All of this is performed in repertory with Nichole Canuso Dance Company’s show Sneakers at Theatre Exile in South Philly.

Annie Wilson is a 2017 Pew Fellow in the Arts. Her work has been presented by Fringearts, Bryn Mawr College, JACK, thirdbird, the Center for Performance Research, and Mascher. Recent work includes: Design Your Own Death, At Home with the Humorless Bastard, Lovertits, The Remix Festival, At the Gloaming with the Hipster Shaman, and Solo. She is an Associated Artist at Applied Mechanics, and an incubated artist at Headlong. Sneakers

Created and performed by Nichole Canuso (Wandering Alice, TAKES, The Garden, Pandæmonium) in collaboration with director Suli Holum, Sneakers is an elegy for what has gone, and a tender tumble through what remains. “Impressive fluency and unassuming humor” (The New York Times).

When someone departs your life they also enter it in a new way; Sneakers is about that shift. Sneakers also examines the architecture of memory, and the systems we construct to house the past, the present, the false, the borrowed and the buried. The last time Canuso, Holum and Kiley collaborated in these same roles, was the Fringe Festival hit Wandering Alice (2008). These three dear friends and collaborators have hovered in one another’s orbit over the years, collaborating in different constellations of artists. They return as a trio to create this deeply personal work about grief and consolation, and the architecture of memory.

Monday evening’s performance will be followed by a late-night cabaret featuring Martha Graham Cracker, Eliza Hardy Jones, Pax Ressler, Emmanuel Delpech and many more. Drinks and snacks will be available throughout the evening. BOX OFFICE: 215-413-1318.

Nichole Canuso Dance Company (NCDC) is dedicated to creating performance experiences that embrace the complexity of humanity. Deep underground, underneath the subways, Dolores is waiting to tell her story. A story of gentrification, survival, and murder inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd, Empanada Loca is a solo Grand Guignol of one woman’s fight to survive in a bloody-minded world of reckless consumerism.

Empanada Loca marks the inaugural production of Recondite Tourist Activities. We hope to produce visceral, dynamic, and character-driven narrative plays both written and devised that explore the fringes of life with empathy and craft. We live as a company somewhere between a B-movie and a broken heart.

This is MMG’s 2nd participation in the festival following the smash hit UNHINGED in 2018. Using the elements water, wind, fire and earth MMG demonstrates the worlds most unusually profound acts of nature.

Matter Movement Group is a physical dance theater company in Philadelphia, PA promoting a distinction in the community by animating the visions of Teddy Fatscher and Frank Leone. Utilizing a collaborative approach, MMG relies heavily on the brains and bodies involved with individual projects. Among annual seasons and tours, MMG uses art and entertainment to raise awareness and funds for local non-profits and charities. MMG has aspirations to bring original works from the local Philadelphia audience to other cities and countries around the world.

After fringe hits Exile 2588, Leaps of Faith and Other Mistakes, and Jeanne/Jean/John/Jawn, Barrymore-winning Almanac Dance Circus Theatre is back with an all-original new production helmed by associate artists Desirée Hall and Mia Rocchio. Drawing on personal experiences in which intimate relationships are disrupted by debilitating and life-threatening illnesses, The Edge uses ensemble acrobatics and live music to bring audiences inside the experience of living life as a caretaker.Through video, acrobatic dance, and live music, brave characters unearth how sanity is found when stability tempts desertion. This original piece reveals relationships between sufferers of debilitating diseases and their caretakers. It’s a kinetic navigation of grief, the point between vitality and decay, and the slaphappy effect of unusual routines.

Come Back, Little Sheba by William Inge

Precarious sobriety: poignant and potent with humor to spare, the quietness of quiet desperation explodes the claustrophobic lives of Lola and Doc. Inge’s 1950 classic comes alive amid outsider art in The Bethany Mission Gallery, illustrating how the pursuit of primal instincts derails and illuminates everyday lives.

Founded in 2006, the Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium (IRC) is the only theater company in the nation dedicated solely to the production, preservation, and study of absurdist drama. The IRC’s mission and signature style has repeatedly earned the company the title “absurdist masters.” The poignancy of repression defining a Midwestern marriage in crisis provides the undercurrent for William Inge’s resilient 1950 classic Come Back, Little Sheba. The pursuit of primal instincts and how they derail everyday lives frames the 1950 play—Inge’s first—written while he was a teacher at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. “…an old house in one of those semi-respectable neighborhoods in a Midwestern city …” is the setting for Come Back, Little Sheba.

The humor and psychological undercurrent of Inge’s classic will come to life amidst over two hundred works of outsider art including drawings & paintings by James Castle, Sam Doyle, Howard Finster, William Hawkins, Martin Ramirez, Bill Traylor and George Widener. Modern renovations to the 1869 Quaker meeting house were completed in February 2012 to accommodate and display the internationally-recognized collection, which also features objects including radios, antique metal toys and milk glass. The gallery will be open to the public one hour prior and following each performance. The Bethany Mission Gallery was the setting for the IRC’s critically-recognized 2018 Fringe production of Tennessee Williams’ The Eccentricities of a Nightingale, and their 2017 production of Eugene Ionesco’s The Bald Soprano.


History of the Play

Come Back, Little Sheba premiered on Broadway at the Booth Theatre on February 15, 1950. The cast included Shirley Booth as Lola, Sidney Blackmer as Doc, and Joan Lorring as Marie. Booth won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play and Blackmer won Best Actor. Reprising her Broadway role, Booth starred opposite Burt Lancaster as Doc and Terry Moore as Marie in a 1952 film adaptation. Booth won both the 1953 Best Actress Academy award and Best Actress – Drama Golden Globe for her portrayal of Lola. William Inge, (born May 3, 1913, Independence, KS—died June 10, 1973, Hollywood Hills, CA) was an American playwright best known for his plays Come Back, Little Sheba (1950; filmed 1952); Picnic (1953; filmed 1956), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize; and Bus Stop (1955; filmed 1956). Inge was educated at the University of Kansas at Lawrence and at the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee.
