Peter Fenton is a Philadelphia-based writer for the stage, screen, and blog committed to creating intelligent, humorous content. He specializes in writing comedy dialog, most frequently within fantasy, fairy tale, and science fiction stories for all ages. Following his first two stage play publications in February 2019, Fenton launched ByPeterFenton.com to begin freelance script and story writing and to host information about each of his stage and screenplays as well as a periodic blog about his writing process and personal life. While they overlapped working at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, director Amanda Pasquini and actress Chelsea Cylinder joined with Fenton to mobilize ByPeterFenton.com as a theatrical production company in May 2019, mounting the world premiere of Fenton’s holiday comedy See Amid the Winter Snow as their debut production.

The Insanity of Mary Girard

In 1790, the wife of noted Philadelphian Stephen Girard awoke to find herself in the mental asylum at The Pennsylvania Hospital. How did she get here? Why has her husband not come to have her released? Is it all a mistake, or is she truly insane? Join us on the inside where we find out more as the tale unfolds.

Sarah Heddins plays Mary Girard in this immersive, thought provoking, and fascinating historical drama about the roles that men and women were expected to play in early American society, and just what can happen when you don’t live up to the expectations of your station. The play centers primarily on Mary’s time in the Pennsylvania Hospital, as told by her and a “greek chorus” of inmates, who help her see clearly the path that lead her to be placed in there with them. This story is based on a letter Stephen Girard wrote to his brother in 1787 where he lamented about,

Having been so foolish as to marry this unfortunate vixen… I treat her properly but at the same time I despise her as much as it is possible to despise anyone… I hate her like the devil and note with pleasure that this feeling increases from day to day.

A powerhouse of actors in this ensemble cast bring the story to life as it is presented in the round, in an intimate theater space. Join us in the basement of the Pennsylvania Hospital as we learn more about Mary and those closest to her, and what led to the tragic fate of Mrs. Stephen Girard.

La Bolivianita

This autobiographical one-woman performance work by Pasión y Arte artistic director Elba Hevia y Vaca explores her story as a Bolivian immigrant and mother. La Bolivianita delves into her almost lifelong journey with Flamenco and how that has continued to evolve as she ages. The piece will culminate in an interactive dialogue with the audience. Directed by world-renowned Flamenco artist Belen Maya. World Premiere.

About Elba Hevia y Vaca

Born in La Paz, Bolivia, Elba Hevia y Vaca began her study of classical Spanish dance at the age of five. She studied with great masters in Spain for over 20 years, and later joined the Ana Martinez Flamenco Dance Company and Raquel Peña Spanish Dance Company in Washington D.C., where she was a soloist. In Philadelphia, she continued her study of modern dance, jazz, and contact improvisation from various Philadelphia artists. In 2000, Hevia y Vaca founded Pasión y Arte out of a strong and intensely personal conviction that highly-stylized traditional Spanish Flamenco dance is a perfect vessel to empower women. These values have been reflected in the eight original, critically acclaimed works she has created for PyA, and in the numerous grants, fellowships, and accolades awarded to Hevia y Vaca and PyA under her direction. In addition, she was nominated for a prestigious Pew Fellowship in 2018. She conducts master classes throughout the US, has taught at local Philadelphia universities, teaches various levels of Flamenco at at her Overbrook Studio in West Philadelphia, and has been teaching at Franklin & Marshall as a Senior Adjunct for the last 20 years.

ENAensemble is a music and theater ensemble focused on cultivating and performing new and important works of theatrical vocal music. Based in Philadelphia and founded by Evan Kassof, Nicole Renna, and Anaïs Naharro-Murphy, ENAensemble has presented a diverse range of productions over the last year. The first production, The Propaganda Machine Show ran for four sold-out nights at the 2018 FringeArts Festival. Following that success, ENAensemble presented a rare, fully-staged version of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with additional works by Ravel, Stravinsky, and Kassof. Since March, ENAensemble has been hard at work guiding new composer/librettist teams in the creation, production, and performance of their new opera episodes as part of the 2019 Serial Opera Project. A resident ensemble in the Music Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia, ENAensemble is constantly developing new ways to present opera, musical theater, art song, and other forms of vocal-led musical story-telling. The 2019-2020 Season has at least four new productions in the works, including a new Serial Musical Project and the 2020 Serial Opera Project.

¡Que Ridículo!

About the Artists

Michael S. Watkins and Joe Bell are the hosts of the popular monthly show Comedian Psychoanalysis at Good Good Comedy Theatre. They regularly perform together as the sketch duo Scrote. They also wrote and starred in the original narrative shows Extreme Wrestling Smacksplosion and Prestige Drama for the Five Dollar Comedy Week comedy festival.

Michael S. Watkins is a comedian, performer, writer and musician based out of Philadelphia. Michael hosts the show Comedian Psychoanalysis and is a member of the sketch group Darlings, both at Good Good Comedy Theatre. He is a writer/content creator for The Hard Times and The Hard Drive. He has opened for such acts as Brody Stevens, Andy Blitz and Kyle Dunnigan. He has performed and written shows for Five Dollar Comedy Week, The Fringe Festival and the Blue Heaven Comedy Festival.

Joe Bell is a comedian, performer and writer based out of Philadelphia. Joe hosts the show Comedian Psychoanalysis and is 1/16th of the sketch group Darlings, both at Good Good Comedy Theatre. He’s written and animated cartoons for Comedy Central, as part of Saturday Morning(ish) Cartoons. In 2018, he wrote the ten-issue comic “Last of the Burger Bunch” for the launch of Collegehumor’s Dropout.tv. He’s performed at and written shows for Five Dollar Comedy Week, The Fringe Festival and the Blue Heaven Comedy Festival.

In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Medusa was a young maiden in service to the temple of Athena. When she caught Poseidon’s attention her fate was sealed—the god forced himself on her in the temple, yet Athena condemned Medusa for having lost her purity, and turned her into the hideous gorgon monster we know, with snakes for hair, so dangerous and hideous that her gaze will turn a man to stone.

Medusa Volution is inspired by her story—by the loss of her humanity, and her condemnation and isolation as a punishment for her sexuality meted out by both male and female gods. Medusa the monster is but one in a Pantheon of female archetypes whose stories are the morality plays of the patriarchy.

The Destination is the Downbeat

This new tap dance and jazz music work by Pamela Hetherington considers how to “keep time” in jazz music. For tap dancers, how they keep time in jazz music has everything to do with who they are as human beings. Time is a feeling; it is swing, groove, and rhythm—the essence of tap dancing itself. Rhythm is personal and music is the original DM (direct message).

Pamela Hetherington’s choreography explores the theme of keeping time across different types of jazz music, including blues, hard bop, free and post-bop and features the music of Bobby Timmons, Oscar Peterson, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Mel Lewis, and original compositions by the band. Featuring Erica Corbo on piano, Paul Giess on trumpet, Nicholas Krolak on bass, and the company of three tap dancers. Along with the musicians, there are three tap dancers working in concert: Lauren Belasco, Alec Chupik, and Kristin Potocki.

Pamela Hetherington brings her company Take It Away Dance to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival for four presentations of The Destination is the Downbeat, a new work that considers the notion of ‘keeping time’ in jazz music. Distinctly Philadelphian in its sound, approach and vibe, Take It Away Dance creates a thrilling combination of movement and music, improvised solos and group choreography. The show explores the theme of keeping time across different types of jazz music and leaps into compositions by Bobby Timmons, Oscar Peterson, Miles Davis and Mel Lewis, along with original compositions by the band. The musical accompaniment is provided by Erica Corbo, (who is also the music director), trumpeter, Paul Giess; and bassist, Nicholas Krolak. Along with the musicians, there are four tap dancers working in concert: Lauren Belasco, Alec Chupik, Morgan O’Shea and Kristin Potocki.

This is the company’s fifth anniversary year. Music Director, Erica Corbo and Pamela Hetherington started working together in 2018, and their musical relationship has extended into other projects that claim a space for women in jazz. The jazz future is female.

Drummers is a former warehouse space renovated into a sophisticated jazz venue by internationally-renowned drummer, Sherrie Maricle. Doors will open at 7 pm, and the music will start at 7:30 each evening. The set will last approximately 75 minutes with no intermission.

About Take It Away Dance: Take It Away Dance maintains the connection of music and dance. Our work is inspired by diverse jazz music influences with a distinctive focus on the music and grooves that originated here in Philadelphia. Take It Away Dance has been presented by Jazz Bridge Neighborhood Concerts, The Philadelphia Jazz Project (7X7 Series), Creative Philadelphia (Culture in the Courtyard), Dixon Place Eight in Show), The Barnes Foundation (Free 1st Sunday), Allentown Art Museum (3rd Thursday), and Symphony Space (Stam-Pede/APAP). The company has presented five original evening-length original concerts since 2014. They have also presented the work of world-renowned women tap dance choreographers, such as Dorothy Wasserman and Heather Cornell, through the re-staging and performance of classic repertory. About Pamela Hetherington: Pamela Hetherington is a Philadelphia tap dancer. Her artistic work aims to expand the boundaries of jazz tap, both as a soloist, a choreographer, and a composer. She was a principle dancer with Tap Team Two & Company, under the direction of Robert F. Burden, Jr., from 1996-2011. In 2014, she created Take It Away Dance, a tap dance and live music company has been presented consistently in Philadelphia and New York for the last five years. For Take It Away Dance, she has choreographed and directed five evening-length tap dance and live music concerts since 2014. Her work moves fluidly into music writing and recording: she has an original jazz composition published in the Philadelphia Real Book and is a featured recording artist on “The Whitman Project” mixtape, published by The Philadelphia Jazz Project. Pam has been interviewed about her work on Articulate (WHYY) and The Arts Desk (WRTI), and she was recognized in The Philadelphia Inquirer and Dance Teacher Magazine for her work directing The Philadelphia Community Tap Project. She owns Philadelphia’s principal studio for percussive dance: Sound Space Performing Arts.

Inquiring minds want to know: Where was The WaitStaff last year? The answer’s a gas! Tune in, turn on, and laugh out loud with the Real Housewives of South Philly as The WaitStaff (America’s Favorite Sketch Comedy Troupe) makes its 18th appearance in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival!

THE WAITSTAFF is a mainstay of the city’s nightlife and theater scene. They’ve played to crowds in New York, Chicago and Washington DC. Dubbed “Philly’s hottest sketch-comedy troupe” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, The WaitStaff has appeared in more Philly Fringe Festivals (18) than any other group. Their fast-paced performances of original, scripted material capitalize on a variety of styles and perspectives.

THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF SOUTH PHILLY (created by WaitStaffer, Sara Carano) have been audience favorites since the ladies first took the stage in 2008. The WaitStaff’s silly, sophisticated, rude and ridiculous shows will sell out. Get your tickets ASAP.

GERRE GARRETT is an actor, director and voice artist. She is a creative dramatics specialist who facilitates workshops for students and professionals in education, business and the healing arts.
(LAUGHTERATWORK.FUN) Currently, Gerre teaches acting and sketch comedy at Drexel University.

CHRIS MCGOVERN is an original member of The WaitStaff. He began as a standup comedian opening for Joe Conklin, Todd Glass, Damon Wayans and a host of others in major comedy clubs from New York to Washington DC. In addition to acting, writing and directing for The Waitstaff, Chris has written and performed several one man shows. His JERSEY BOY and THE LAZY BOY ACTIVIST were produced by the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival.

RYAN MCMENAMIN is a Johnny-on-the-spot/Jack-off-all-trades. He’s been pushing the buttons that make the lights and sounds go for the WaitStaff since 2004! He is honored to be part of the creative process and this art-by-committee sketch comedy craziness.

CATHERINE MARY MORONEY has been performing on Philadelphia stages for over 20 years. She last appeared with Eric Singel in his comedies, I’d Kill for an Emmy and Murder in Dixie. A dual citizen of Ireland and the U.S. she is the Controller for FLIXFLING.COM and enjoys creating music, oil and acrylic painting and traveling abroad. Catherine is currently working on her first adventure novel featuring math and magic.

ERIC SINGEL was last seen in the 2017 Fringe Festival in the one-diva show, JOAN CRAWFORD IN HER OWN WORDS. He first appeared with the WaitStaff in the 2008 where he introduced astrologist, Starzina Starfish-Browne who has since gone on to star in her own show, LOOKING FOR URANUS. His marriage equality show, THE WEDDING CONSULTANT was named “…the most engaging entertainment [of the 2007 Philadelphia New Play Festival]” by VARIETY and enjoyed a successful revival at the 2011 Fringe. Favorite roles include Arnold (TORCH SONG TRILOGY) Reverend Parris (THE CRUCIBLE) and Dan Butler’s one-man show (THE ONLY THING WORSE YOU COULD HAVE TOLD ME.)

The Murder & Booze Cabaret

Florence and Texas have three things in common: liquor, death, and music. Real and real-crazy drunken tales of fame and violence from the 1920s fuse with jazzy riffs on modern pop songs for a night of high notes, low blows, and bespoke cocktails.

Empanada Loca

Deep underground, underneath the subways, Dolores is waiting to tell her story. A story of gentrification, survival, and murder inspired by the legend of Sweeney Todd, Empanada Loca is a solo Grand Guignol of one woman’s fight to survive in a bloody-minded world of reckless consumerism.

Empanada Loca marks the inaugural production of Recondite Tourist Activities. We hope to produce visceral, dynamic, and character-driven narrative plays both written and devised that explore the fringes of life with empathy and craft. We live as a company somewhere between a B-movie and a broken heart.
