Meet the Fall 2016 Interns

What drew you to this internship?

After graduation, I’m hoping to work in the music industry, preferably with a non-profit. Ideally, I want to work at a non-profit venue that curates their own shows, and doesn’t rely on major promoters. FringeArts seemed like the perfect fit for that, and I wanted to experience the challenge of promoting non-conventional artists and performances.

What do you do outside of FringeArts?

I love music! I go to a lot of concerts and I’m a major Philly foodie. When I’m not at Fringe, I’m working at Temple’s School of Media & Communication Career Center and I’m an Assistant Firm Director for a student-run public relations firm at Temple. I also go to class (usually).

Where’s one place in Philly you feel the most relaxed?

There’s a parking garage in center city near the Convention Center and the top level has an incredible view of the city. At night, it’s really quiet and you can see all of the skyscrapers in center city lit up. During the day, you can see the architecture of the surrounding buildings really well.

If you could find yourself in any work of art what would it be?

I would like to be a tree in the background of a movie because then I would be secretly famous.

What is your favorite part of interning with FringeArts?

Right now I’m putting together a list of production resources for the independent artists in next year’s Festival. The self-produced shows are my favorite part of the Festival, and it’s great to help facilitate that.

What FringeArts show are you most excited for?

I’m excited to see At Home with the Humorless Bastard because I love performances that can’t be classified as any one thing. It’s easy to remove yourself from something if you sit down thinking “this is a play.” I like to be thinking “what’s about to happen to me?”

Where do you spend most of your time when you’re not at FringeArts?

I run events on the weekends with my school’s Student Programming Board and during the week I work at my school’s Community Engagement Office so that keeps me pretty busy. When I’m not spending my time doing that you can almost always find me cuddling with a giant Mastiff named Harry.

If you could be any animal what would it be?

If I could be an elephant I’d be content for life.

What has been the best experience at your internship?

As much as I love the work I get to do and all the learning that I’m getting out of this position, I have to say having dogs in the office has got to be the best. I don’t think I’ve ever met a group of people who are as passionately in love with dogs as I am, so whenever there is a dog in the office my day is made.

What FringeArts show are you looking forward to?

Nowhere Fast.

Do you know of any hidden gems in Philly?

I wouldn’t call it a hidden gem, but I really do enjoy the Art Museum as well as the Franklin Institute. Their exhibits are great and highly popularized, which is why tickets are usually gone.

Where do you hope to find yourself after this internship is over?

Hopefully using the skills I learn to help me towards my goal of becoming a Creative Director for an institution or company I highly believe in.

What’s your favorite piece of art that you own?

The 1995 film Heavyweights on VHS. Tony Perkis was Ben Stiller at his best.

Where do you hope this internship leads you?

I come from classical music production and knew FringeArts and the production internship would expose me to cutting edge and unorthodox performances, something not found in the conservative and traditional practices of live classical music. Besides this, I am hoping to better my understanding of sound design with Fringe’s Head of Audio, Chris Sannino.

What is one place in Philly you can’t live without?

Plaza Azteca, though it’s in Plymouth Meeting… However, they have the best, cheapest, and biggest frozen margaritas I have ever had (and I spent a summer in Sante Fe, NM so trust me on this one). Plus their Tuesday Trivia night is my jam.

Do you know of any hidden gems in Philly? (Please share!)

There’s this really awesome tiny park on Chestnut Street in Center City. It’s called the John F. Collins Park, and it has this amazing gate and an awesome water fountain that you can sit on and hang out!

If you could find yourself in any work of art what would it be?

I always wanted to be an extra in a period piece film. You get to dress up in cool costumes and makeup, but you don’t have to remember any lines!

Where do you hope this internship leads you?

I’m hoping that my intern experience will help me to decided which career path I’d like to take and the knowledge that I’ve gained will help me with future film projects!

What are you looking forward to at FringeArts?

I’m looking forward to experiencing the world of theater and entertainment in a whole new light. I’ve never done anything on the administrative side of things before, so I feel like this is a really good chance to do that. I’ve seen a couple of shows through FringeArts already, and I really like the material that FringeArts gives a home to. I’m excited to see Red 40 and the Last Groovement again on New Year’s Eve. I saw them at their album release party, and I ended up getting the album because thought they were really cool.

What’s your favorite piece of art that you own?

Oh man, this is a tough question. I wouldn’t be able to pick a film if my life depended on it. My tastes change very often so this next answer is pretty much based on what I’m feeling right now. Musically speaking, it’s probably my copy of Esperanza Spalding’s album, Esperanza. All of her stuff is amazing, but that album holds a special place in my heart.

If you could have dinner with any artist, who would it be and what would you eat?

I don’t really idolize artists because I feel like it puts a lot of unrealistic expectations on a person, so this is another hard question for me. I’m just gonna say Prince because his work and behavior have always fascinated me, even before he died. I own a ridiculous amount of his music. As for the food, I’ll just go for spaghetti ’cause I’m really hungry right now, and I can’t stop thinking about my mom’s home cooking.

If you could compare yourself to one artist who would it be?

I would compare myself to Cezanne. I am a hard worker. I like to revisit things and see them from multiple perspectives. I also have a hard time being satisfied with a finished product and will constantly think of how to approach the problem differently. I am a perfectionist which can hurt me and my work but ultimately allows me to approach art and life with a scientific method. At the same time I am filled with passion and emotion. I struggle sometimes to keep it at bay during times of hardship or of great accomplishment for me or for others.

Where do you hope to find yourself after this internship is over?

I hope to find myself continuing my path to running an art museum. That’s the goal as of right now but in terms of plans, I’m pretty flexible. So, as of right now, I am researching and applying to jobs in DC having to do with museum work. My dream would be to work at the national gallery of art.

What FringeArts show are you looking forward to?

I am so looking forward to Jean and Terry. From the description and knowing the artists, it will assuredly be a beautiful and comical take on the evolution of the self and the exploration of consciousness.
