Meet the Spring 2020 Interns

Mary Swingle

Pronouns: she/her/hers

University: Temple University

Internship: Marketing Intern

Major/Degree: BA in Media Studies and Production

What have you enjoyed most about your internship?

I have definitely enjoyed getting to know everyone in the office and learning new tools in marketing and social media as well as being apart of a company. The dogs are definitely a plus too.

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to teleport so I could travel around the world for free and also wake up at the last possible second for classes.

What’s your favorite Philly food?

My favorite Philly food is pork roll and obviously cheesesteaks.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is La La Land, because it combines all my favorite things into one great film.

Internship: Communications Intern

Major/Degree: Film and Media Arts / Content Creation

What have you enjoyed most about your internship?

I’ve most enjoyed the hands-on learning and practical application of my internship. Learning how to schedule and create social media posts and content has helped me in both this role and in my personal life too. I’ve also enjoyed having dogs in the office!

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

If I could have any superpower I would want telekinesis because when I’m lying bed I’d like to be able to summon food into my mouth from the kitchen without getting up. Or find the tv remote or really find anything because I can summon it with my mind.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would travel to Greece because its a dream of mine to recreate every scene from Mama Mia!

 What’s your favorite Philly food?

A cheesesteak. Whiz w/ out for sure.

Internship: Graphic Design Intern

Major/Degree: Advertising, Concentration: Art Direction

What have you enjoyed most about your internship?

I really enjoy being able to work on creative projects while incorporating my own design ideas for both print and web materials. I really love the collaborative environment here at FringeArts and really appreciate all of the helpful feedback I receive on my designs. I learn so much from the senior staff in the Marketing Department and feel like I have gained a lot of knowledge about designing for specific events. Giving Gimlet a belly rub is also a major highlight of my day.

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

I grew up exclusively watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, so this one isn’t too difficult. I’d definitely be a water bender. So many benefits. Freeze water, boil water, make a water bubble around your head when you swim, the possibilities are endless. Definitely not into blood bending though, that was scary. Katara was always the coolest and so powerful, so it’s hard to not want to be like her. Waterbenders are also probably great with plants which would be refreshing for me, an accidental plant murderer.

What’s your favorite tv show?

Maniac on Netflix is definitely my favorite tv show. It’s for sure a must-see. Jonah Hill and Emma Stone nail their performances and you’re basically transported into this weird futuristic world where everyone dresses in lab coats and the characters travel to different dimensions through their minds. Directed by the coolest: Cary Joji Fukunaga. Seriously one of the best shows out there.

Would you rather be a reverse centaur or a reverse mermaid?

I have so many questions. If I’m a reverse mermaid, can I live on both lands and in the sea? Do I have gills and human lungs? As a centaur, do I have hooves and, if so, are they as big as my human hands or super huge? I guess I gotta say reverse centaur because the idea of eating apples and sugar cubes is definitely appealing and I think I wouldn’t want to feel my slimy scales as a reverse mermaid. I will miss my opposable thumbs though.

What have you enjoyed the most about your internship?

With this internship, I truly feel like I am a valued member of the team. Every assignment I am given is very much hands-on and opens my eyes to new experiences. I have learned so much from the talented Development team at Fringe and feel like I can take on any job that may come into my career. Besides everything I’ve learned, I love all the local coffee shops I’ve been able to explore in the area!

What is your favorite podcast?

Since I commute into Fringe everyday from New Jersey, I have recently become obsessed with podcasts. More specifically, “My Favorite Murder” by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. If you love hearing about crazy murders, mysteries, or supernatural phenomena from two hilarious women, I highly recommend giving this podcast a listen! It helps pass the time on my commute!

What do you do in your downtime?

I am a very active person, so my downtime usually consists of me finding a way to move my body. When I have some free time, you can usually catch me in the dance studio working on my technique, jamming out to music, or creating choreography. Dance is my passion! You can also always find me in the yoga studio, namaste!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would love to spend my whole life traveling, visiting every country. However, there is one place that sticks out to me the most. I would absolutely love to visit Australia one day. It seems like such a beautiful country, filled with beautiful beaches and super outdoorsy people. Plus, who doesn’t love a good Australian accent?

Internship: Podcast Production Intern

Major/Degree: Media Studies and Production

What have you enjoyed most about your internship?

I love working in this creative, inclusive environment. I enjoy having the opportunity to learn more about performance art and the immense thought that goes into every program, every show, and every performance, from the talent to the stage crew. It’s a huge effort and labor of love, and it absolutely pays off. The podcast is a special lens through which to understand this effort, because it boils down different perspectives on the arts to their bare-bones sound bites.

Why did you apply to intern at FringeArts?

As a student in Klein College of Media and Communications, I have been shown many avenues that one could go down in the media production sphere. I’ve found it challenging to pick one avenue that speaks to me, and when I read about this internship, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me to learn about even more potential paths that could work for me. Now, I get to work with audio production, which I love, as well as get an inside scoop into a creative industry that I previously didn’t know a lot about.

What’s your favorite podcast?

My favorite podcast is Ologies, by Alie Ward! Alie interviews specialists across the science field and makes science super fun and understandable. It’s a combination of science and comedy, which is truly a brilliant and underrated combination.

What’s your favorite Philly food?

The Ethopian food in West Philly can’t be beat! It’s so flavorful, satisfying, and fun to eat because you mostly eat with your hands. I highly recommend checking them out!

Internship: Finance Internship

Major/Degree: Finance degree

What have you enjoyed most about your internship?

I’ve most enjoyed the people so far in my internship. Everyone has been incredibly friendly and gracious, especially considering how many interns there are throughout the year, and how relatively short of a time we are here. Melissa and Katherine have been extraordinarily helpful and patient while I learn the ropes on the particulars of the software and protocols used here. Last, but certainly not least, Porsche has been invaluable in easing my transition and, since I sit right next to her, answering the many questions I have, helping me find whatever I might need, just being a friendly face throughout the day.

Why did you apply to FringeArts?

I applied to FringeArts because it was an uncanny combination of my current job and what I hope to be my future profession. I currently work in the arts as the Coordinator of Music for a church in New Jersey, but my major is in finance. So stumbling upon an internship in Financial Arts Management seemed like the perfect fit.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

If I could travel anywhere in the world, it would have to be New Zealand, which happens to be where Lord of the Rings was filmed. It has such a diverse geography and combination of cultures that makes it a perfect place to explore.

Would you rather be a reverse centaur or a reverse mermaid?

I’d love to be a reverse centaur with mermaid tail and powers. So I can be on land and in water and more and more powersssss mwahahahahahaaaaa!!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would go to every senior center in as many countries as possible, and bring my dancers with me so that we can perform for the older folks that may not get regular entertainment!!

If you could trade lives with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?

If I could trade lives with someone I’d switch with the head coordinator for Andre Rieu so that I can learn what it’s like to run such a far-reaching arts machine, and then come back and implement that for Philly.
